Professor Graham Giles joined in the Cancer Council of Victoria in 1983 as the Director of the Victorian Cancer Registry and became the Director of the Cancer Epidemiology Centre in 1986, and Deputy Director of the Cancer Control Research Institute in 2001.

He has honorary professorial appointments at the University of Melbourne and Monash University, and has served on several national and international committees including the Scientific Council of the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyons, France. He is the chief investigator of the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study (Health 2020) and a principal investigator of large population-based family studies of cancers of the breast, bowel and prostate, and melanoma.
